Best AI agents for customer support

The honest shortlist: Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI, Decagon, Sierra and Ada — what each one is, who it fits, and when a custom-built agent beats them all.

The shortlist

Support is the use case where AI agents are already in production, not in a demo reel. That means the market is crowded and the honest answer depends on your stack, your volume and how much of the edge cases you can tolerate being wrong. Here is the shortlist, stated plainly.

01_intercom-fin.md

[1] Intercom Fin

# platform

Intercom's AI agent for customer service, built natively into the Intercom platform.

  • best for: teams already running support on Intercom who want an AI agent with the least friction.
  • our read: Native to Intercom, so it is the obvious first look if that is already your support stack — and less portable if you ever want to leave the platform.
02_zendesk-ai.md

[2] Zendesk AI

# platform

Zendesk's AI layer across its support suite: agent copilot, suggested replies and automated resolutions.

  • best for: larger support teams on Zendesk automating tier-1 volume and giving agents a copilot.
  • our read: Deeply wired into Zendesk ticket data, which is the point — and the reason it is tied to the Zendesk ecosystem.
03_decagon.md

[3] Decagon

# platform

a dedicated AI customer-service agent platform for resolving tickets across channels.

  • best for: companies that want a standalone support agent rather than one bolted onto a legacy helpdesk.
  • our read: Purpose-built for support automation; a younger vendor, so check maturity against your own volume before betting on it.
04_sierra.md

[4] Sierra

# platform

AI customer-service agents from Sierra, co-founded by Bret Taylor.

  • best for: enterprise brands that want a managed, high-touch conversational agent.
  • our read: Known for large-enterprise deployments and positioned at the top of the market; budget accordingly.
05_ada.md

[5] Ada

# platform

a no-code platform for building AI chatbots that automate customer support.

  • best for: teams that want to build and iterate support automations themselves, without code.
  • our read: Self-serve and fast to stand up; deeper automation still tends to need engineering once you hit the edge cases.
METHODOLOGY.md

how we ranked

This is our editorial shortlist, ordered by fit for the common case — not a benchmark, not a paid placement. We only state what each tool verifiably is: its category, its deployment model, and what it is broadly used for. We do not publish unverifiable claims about pricing, performance or reliability, so if a number matters to your decision, go read the vendor and ask for references.

where-we-fit.sh

where buildhaus fits

BuildHaus does not sell a support tool, and we will not pretend otherwise. The honest fit is this: when the off-the-shelf agents above hit a wall — a custom escalation path, a backend none of them integrate with, a workflow that must be auditable — we build the agent on Workbench, wire it into your stack, and hand it over to run. If one of the platforms above already covers your case, we will tell you to buy it instead of building.

$ cat ./verdict.sh

The bottom line

verdict.sh

exit 0 — here's our read

If you are already on Intercom or Zendesk, start with their native agent — it is the cheapest way to learn what support you can actually automate. If you want a standalone agent, Decagon and Sierra are the serious candidates. If none of them fit because your support is genuinely unusual, that is the one case where building beats buying, and that is what we do.
